A tour of the world’s leagues
Europe
4 min
Europe is the heart of FIBA-rules basketball: 4×10 minutes, a closer three-point line, and a slower, more physical, tactically rich style. Totals here typically run lower than the NBA.
The continental competitions
- EuroLeague — the top continental club competition, often called the second-best league in the world. Elite defense, deliberate offense, and famously low-scoring, high-pressure games.
- EuroCup — the second-tier continental tournament, a step below EuroLeague but still strong, and a proving ground for rising clubs.
Major domestic leagues
- ACB / Liga Endesa (Spain) — widely regarded as the strongest domestic league in Europe, technically sharp and physical.
- Basket League (Greece) — passionate, defense-first basketball with storied clubs.
- LKL (Lithuania) — a small country with an outsized basketball culture; disciplined, fundamentals-driven play.
- Super League (Israel) — competitive and increasingly international in talent.
In most of these leagues a final in the 70s or 80s is normal. Reading a European score against NBA expectations will mislead you every time.
The European takeaway: lower totals, tighter margins, and possessions that matter more.
